The Girl of Fire and Thorns by Rae Carson
Publisher: Greenwillow Books Release date: September 20, 2011 Pages: 424 When Elisa was born, the heavens opened up and implanted a jewel into her navel. This jewel, called the Godstone, marks Elisa as a Bearer—one destined to do greatness for God and humanity. When Elisa turns sixteen, she has yet to do anything remarkable, so her father is marrying her off to a king of another land. Almost immediately after journeying to her new home, Elisa is kidnapped by people who believe her destiny is to save them. The Girl of Fire and Thorns published last September, and though I had heard great things, I never got the chance to read it. If you like me, then here are my essay on this book.. Reasons why you shouldn’t pass this one by: The religious aspect. I’m fascinated by religion, and even more so by religion in fiction. Rae Carson does such a great job of creating hers—the mythology is rock solid, and it’s clear that religion is a driving force in the world The Girl of Fire and Thorns is set in. Rae Carson uses religion to help develop the setting and characters in the best ways. Elisa. Elisa, the protagonist, is initially a bit too self-deprecating, but eventually, I warmed to her. By the second half of the book, I was beginning to become really impressed by her strategically-oriented mind. It’s impossible to pinpoint the exact moment of Elisa’s shift, which speaks to Rae Carson’s talent: the character grows slowly over time, rather than instantaneously. The other characters. I found myself becoming attached to almost all the minor characters in The Girl of Fire and Thorns even those whose intentions might not be wholly good. Despite not being in the spotlight, the minor characters come alive to help the story move along (and sometimes break our hearts). The writing. The last thing I’d like to highlight is Rae Carson’s writing style. It’s perfect for the kind of book she’s writing: descriptive, eloquent, and moderately paced. Fantasy fans, this one’s for you. If you like political intrigue, long, treacherous journeys through the desert, and fierce princesses, then The Girl of Fire and Thorns will be right up your alley. 4.5/5 stars I hope you have found this article interesting.
